Friday, we went to a pool. I always went to the pool in contact lenses, and so did I on Friday. Bad idea; I developed a "swimmer's eye."
I had hazy vision most of the day and evening.
Fast forward to the middle of the night. I woke up in severe eye pain and the stickiest eye discharge ever. The worst part was that the eyeball "spasms" every few minutes, causing severe tearing and a severely running nose. I can't even describe it adequately. I have never experienced that before nor heard of it. In additon I developed angioedema and severe sinus pressure. Any attempt to look into the distance or anything further than maybe 4 inches of my eyes caused nasal discharge and painful cramping/spasm of my eyeball. My only explanation was a Mast Cell reaction, as the swelling and the "allergy" symptoms reminded me of that.
I took an extra dose of cetirizine, but I got no relief. I couldn't even close my eyelids without severe pain. So there went my sleep.
In the morning, I went to a German pharmacy and told the pharmacist that I had MCAS and thought my eyes reacted severely to the "swimmer's eye." She explained that Chromolin nose spray or eye drops won't help now and recommended specific allergy eye drops and nasal spray. The active ingredient is Azelastine. I have not heard of that one ever before.
It worked quickly; by the evening, my eyes were almost okay, and no angioedema was visible.
I have never experienced anything like this, and I hope I don't ever experidon'tthis again.
As our time here in Germany is short, we continued in our itenerary as planned.
Of course, my family couldn't stop frocouldn't a "unique" vacation"pictur" …. This was right after I attempted to enjoy the view, and I experienced these strange spasms where you can't do anythingcan't"hold your eyes" "ill it passes…" The weather was bad, raining, but the view was still amazing, as I can tell now from the picture. It was taken from Hambach Castle, by the way.
