Reiki is a topic that has caused conflicts for me between my personal experiences, teachings, and scientific understanding. Although I cannot explain why Reiki has always been present in my life. In the early 2000s, a friend who was becoming a Reiki practitioner introduced me to it, and I experienced true relaxation for the first time. As an EMT student, I was initially skeptical, but I was amazed at the results. Later, when I was challenging my NREMT paramedic exams in the USA, I again turned to Reiki to help me relax, focus, and study. Eventually, I became a practitioner myself, although I mainly use it on myself or friends if asked. I do not advertise that I practice Reiki because I do not entirely understand how it works. However, I do believe in keeping an open mind and not judging ancient practices such as Reiki, shamanism, Ayurveda, herbal remedies, and crystal healing, which have been used for much longer than Western medicine has been around.
So, what exactly is Reiki? According to the International Center for Reiki Training, it is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. When our "life force energy" is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and when it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki is administered by "laying on hands" and feels like a warm, glowing radiance that flows through and around the body. It treats the whole person, including the body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects such as relaxation, peace, security, and well-being. Many people have reported miraculous results, and Reiki has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady. It is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that anyone can use. Reiki is not a religion, and it has no dogma, so there is nothing one must believe in to learn and use it. Reiki works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery, and it can also help people connect more deeply with their religious experience.
